SUMMARY:Monthly Get-Togethers
DESCRIPTION:The Joint Monday Lunches enjoyed by the Cruising and Classic Boat Section members\,but open to all club members. \nSome background information: \nWe started these lunches as a result from some of our older members at our 2021 Classic Boat Section AGM.\nA lot our members are reluctant at times to visit the club due to sometimes not knowing the members who are in the bar lounge at the time of their visit or they have lost their partners and friends in life and are now feeling rather lonely. These members once owned yachts and enjoyed the company of club friends during their younger club days. These friendships have been enjoyed over the years\, but time passes and circumstances have changed. Travelling at night can also be a problem for some not wanting to drive in the dark and some have suffered with the new LED lights on newer vehicles that tend to be so bright and very dazzling when driving.\nAs a result\, I decided with our committee to start these Get-Togethers once a month on each second Monday per month. Having run them now for 22 months these last two years they have been very successful\, and our members look forward to them. \nPlease can you advertise these lunches on the club website each month and also have a slot on the rolling TV screens in the club house. \nI also check with the office staff each month to make sure that the Skylight Lounge is free\,\nMondays being a fairly light day for any hire. These lunches start around 12 noon and last for up to two and a half hours. \nMany thanks \nKen Wilding: Skipper Classic Boat Section

SUMMARY:Harry Gregory – Harbour Master Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Work of Poole Harbour Commissioners\n\n  \nPHC’s work towards ensuring safe\, efficient\, enjoyable and environmentally friendly navigation\, and how yacht club members can play their part. \nHarry first discovered a love for the sea aged six when\, on holiday in Cornwall with his family\, he took part in a dinghy sailing taster session. \n“It felt like it was in the middle of a storm\, but in hindsight it was probably quite benign\,” he said. \n“A lot of my family got into sailing as a result of that\, and I gradually progressed from dinghies to yachts then\, eventually to ships.” \nAlong with his parents moving there when he was in his teens\, Harry\, who spent time working in project management for the Royal Navy and the Ministry of Defence\, did much of his training in Poole. \n“I’ve always been attracted to Poole\, and I always hoped to come back here one day.” \nHarry’s new role will see him ensuring the harbour’s Marine Services team and pilots are all operating effectively. \n“In the first instance my aim is to fill Brian’s enormous shoes\, then I’ll work out what might need to be done after that. \n“If I can continue to do what we’re doing at the moment\, while making some small improvements and responding to whatever challenges will inevitably come around the corner next week\, then that’s great.” \nOutside of work Harry spends much of his time with his young family\, but when he gets the chance he has a number of nautical hobbies to keep him busy. \nTo conclude\, Harry said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be here. \n“I’ve had a real connection to Poole for many years and I look forward to meeting the several thousand harbour users that we’ve got and working out whether what we’re doing is up to scratch\, and how we can make the harbour the best it can be!” \nTo book your place on this very interesting talk please click HERE \nDon’t forget the Restaurant is open so there will be time for a meal before the talk. Make an evening of it.

SUMMARY:Tim Edom's Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Talk
DESCRIPTION:Tim will be talking about the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and his involvement helping the young people cope by learning the skills of sailing and working together. \nThe Trust is for 8-17 and 18-24 year-olds\, and is free to anyone who has been treated for cancer. Their free four-day sailing adventures can be transformational. But whether you get afloat on the Isle of Wight or in Scotland\, sailing is only the start. \nInspiring brighter futures goes beyond a one-off experience. The Trust’s free Return Trips for under 18s and 18+ years provide the continued support many young people need living through and beyond cancer\, and there’s a chance for siblings of young people who are being or have been treated for cancer to enjoy an adventure of their own. \n\nDon’t forget the Restaurant is open so there will be time for a meal before the talk. Make an evening of it. \n\n \n
