Haven Use
1. What is the speed limit inside the haven?
The maximum permitted speed is 3 knots at all times.
2. Which side should I navigate on?
Always keep to the right and pass port-to-port (left side to left side).
3. Who has priority in the haven?
Priority must be given to:
- Sailing boats
- Vessels already manoeuvring
4. Must I use my engine inside the haven?
Yes. Vessels are required to use motor propulsion within the haven for safe control.
5. What precautions should I take around dinghies?
Avoid manoeuvring when large groups of dinghies are entering or leaving the haven.
6. How should I communicate my manoeuvres?
Clearly indicate your intentions to other users through appropriate signals and controlled navigation.
7. What should I do if I break down near the club?
Contact the yard staff:

Pontoon Use
8. Do I need training to moor?
Mooring requires skill and judgement. If guidance is needed, contact training@pooleyc.co.uk. A sailing professional can advise on training opportunities.
9. How many mooring lines are required?
A minimum of four adequate strength lines:
- Two forward
- One side line
- One spring line
Yard staff can assist if required.
10. Are fenders required?
Yes.
- Fenders must be placed on both sides.
- They may be tied, but not screwed, to the pontoon.
11. Can any part of my boat overhang the pontoon walkway?
No. No part of the vessel may extend beyond the metal strip along the walkway.
If it does, you may be charged for yard staff to reposition the vessel.
12. Can tenders or equipment be left beside the boat?
No. Tenders and equipment may not be left behind or alongside the vessel.
13. How does electricity access work?
Electricity cards and top-ups are available from:
- The Office
- The Haven Office
If you leave without transferring unused credit back to your card, it may be used by a temporary berth holder. This remains the berth holder’s responsibility.
14. What are the rules for water usage?
- Use water sparingly.
- Do not leave hoses unattended or submerged.
When finished:
- Close the tap at the pontoon.
- Open the tap at the user end of the hose.
15. How should RIBs berth?
Where possible, berth with the engine towards the pontoon to avoid hazards in fairways.
Ensure outboard motors do not obstruct other sailors.
16. Are the pontoons safe in wet conditions?
Pontoons can become slippery.
- Identify your nearest rescue ladder (clearly marked).
- Consider wearing a life jacket, especially when alone.
17. Where are trolleys kept?
Trolleys are stored under the Haven Office. They must be returned immediately after use.
General Rules
18. Can marine toilets be used in the haven?
No. The use of marine toilets is prohibited within the haven.
19. Is fishing allowed?
No fishing is permitted in the haven area.
20. Who may drive on the east bund wall?
Only F-Pontoon berth holders may slowly drive a vehicle up the east bund wall.
Note:
- The road has no barrier.
- It belongs to Poole Harbour Commissioners.
21. What is the waiting pontoon used for?
The waiting pontoon is an emergency berth operated by Poole Harbour.
It may be used for:
- Short-term repairs
- Adjustments
- Picking up passengers or equipment
Boats may not be left unattended or overnight unless authorised by yard staff.
22. What are the requirements for R19 berth holders?
To remain eligible for a berth, R19 boats must compete in at least 50% of the main Tuesday race series.
23. What should I do if something is damaged or not working?
Report issues immediately to:
